EcoAthens together with Attika Wine Producers Union scouts new trails on Mount Hymmetos

On April 3, 2016, the EcoAthens team together with members of ENOAA (Union of Wine Producers of Attiki Region)  went to the mountain of Hymmetus (East Athens) in order to investigate a new trail.  We started from the east Athens area called Karea. This area is known for its Monastery of St. John and used to be a green zone, covered by aromatic pine trees. Unfortunately, during the last couple of years the fires destroyed the forest, and as the result, a wide space opened up in the forest to give hikers an opportunity to see the horizon up to 20 and 30 kilometers

Our mission was to build a nice trail from one part of Mt. Hymmetos to another, crossing the mountain and going from the west side to the east.  There are many trails on the mountain marked with different colors, red, orange, yellow, blue.  We decided to give to our trail the color green.   As we ascended, the most beautiful panorama  came into view.  We could see all Athens, from south Piraeus port and Salamina island to North Kifisia, Parnitha National Park and Mt.  Penteli. What a spectacular view!

Nature was celebrating its most glorious spring with the ground all around us covered by vividly bright flowers.  The aroma of the flowers combined with the clean fresh air was intoxicating and put all of us in a blissful state.

As we crossed the mountain another view appeared in front of us. We could see all east Attika, the Aegean sea, Evia island, and the green forested areas of Mt. Hymmetos.
