Diomidis Botanical Gardens is the largest botanical garden in Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean. Spread out over 1,860 square meters, the garden displays over 2,500 different plants from Greece and around the world. The Anthonas section of the garden has 15 flower beds and 25 lakes. Another section is a bamboo forest where the plants grown there are used in the treatment of infectious diseases. Near the main entrance are global plants from Oceania, Asia, Africa, North and Central America.
The garden is named for Alexandros Diomedes, a former prime minister whose family came from Spetses island. He and his wife Julia left a portion of their fortune to the Greek state to create this marvelous ecosystem. The garden was designed by Professor W. Hammerbacher of the University of Berlin and opened to the public in 1975.
Two hours are spent at the Diomidis Garden, although one could also spend two days because the grounds are so extensive and enticing.
After touring the Diomidis Garden guests are transferred to Zafiro Experience for lunch. Zafiro is a traditional Greek environment from our grandmothers’ era. It offers an interactive experience in Greek culture where you learn, for example, to weave on a horizontal loom or make bread by grinding the seeds in an authentic pre-industrial Greek watermill and baking in a wood oven.
